I think I love making dumplings more than eating them. That’s because, I am truly fascinated with all their beautiful shapes. While I have tried about five of them, these star shaped ones by far are the easiest. And if you are a beginner, then you could start shaping your dumplings with this way. As easy as it is to shape, these spicy basil chicken dumplings are also quick and easy to make. With minimal cutting, chopping and fussing around shaping them, these steamed chicken dumplings are a joy to put together. They taste herby, spicy and juicy, all at once, everything you’d want in the perfect dumpling. Coming to the dip, I have served these with my lip smacking and fiery chili garlic chutney. One of my favourite chutneys, that is also a perfect match for these spicy dumplings. In fact, this the same one I had made to accompany my chicken momos.
Chicken momos or dumplings are my most favourite, followed by the shrimp ones. And I always like keeping the stuffing moist and juicy. After all, when you bite into a steaming hot chicken dumpling, it should be melt-in-the-mouth good. And that happens with the right texture and combination of ingredients in the stuffing. So, to flavour and spice up my minced chicken stuffing I have used Sriracha, soy sauce and vinegar. And to keep it moist there are the spring onions and basil. Moreover, I have used minced chicken thighs for my recipe which are anyways juicer than chicken breasts.

Shaping the dumplings
Like I mentioned, the star shaped dumplings are the easiest that I have made so far. I have detailed the how to for these in the recipe card below. The boast shaped dumplings, that you see above, are another shape that I made with the same chicken stuffing. However, you could shape them however you wish to. For the wrappers, you could use store bought ones for your spicy basil chicken dumplings. But I have made mine at home. If you are feeling as motivated as I generally do when making momos, you can find the detailed recipe of the wrappers here.
The stuffing
To my minced chicken stuffing I have added chilis, black pepper powder as well as Sriracha to spike it. If you don’t have Sriracha, you can replace it with any hot sauce that is available. However, if this is too much heat, you can reduce their quantities in your chicken dumplings. Also, there are garlic and basil, in there, lending their amazing fragrance. And remember the basil is as much an important ingredient here as is the chicken. So, don’t shy away from adding loads of it. Additionally, if you can lay your hands on some Thai basil then definitely use that here. It’s yummy peppery flavour makes these dumplings even more yum.
These steamed chicken dumplings are super fun to make and extremely yummy to eat. They are a very popular party appetizer and a great weekend brunch idea, too. Dip your steaming, soft and yummy chicken dumplings into the fiery chutney and enjoy!
