A delicious no bake tart with a base made of crushed Oreos and a filling of a delectable, Indian style mango flavored yoghurt!
Mangoes, are not just a summer fruit for me. They are an emotion really! They represent summer vacations, visiting my grandparents in Kolkata, relishing this fruit with my cousins and everything memorable. And the icing on the cake would be, getting to eat other varieties of mangoes. While in Mumbai, we would have the alphonso mangoes, in Kolkata we devoured the langda aam. Hence, when last week, we got our first dozen of alphonsos, all these lovely memories came flooding back. So, to relive all of them and of course also to enjoy this seasonal fruit I made this no bake, Oreo mango shrikhand tart. Being a chocolate lover, I just had to sneak in some, you see. 🙂
For those of you who may not know, my easy mango tart is a fusion recipe. It is one of those amazing ones where the best of the East meet that of the West! Shrikhand is a Maharashtrian dessert made with hung curd or Greek yoghurt, which is sweetened and flavoured with cardamom. It a traditional dessert that is most often served in festivals and other joyous occasions. And it’s mango version is called aamrakhand or mango shrikhand. So, while I have created my tart base with Oreo biscuits, the filling is that of mango flavoured yoghurt. Delicious, I say!

The fact that my mango tart is a no bake recipe, reduces your effort almost by half! The other half of preparing the filling, is equally very easy. To make the shrikhand, all that you will need to do is, mix together the yoghurt, mango pulp and some gelatin and allow it to set. Just two very simple steps will yield you a very delicious dessert. However, two things, that I haven’t done, that are traditional to making the aamrakhand are, flavouring it with cardamom and secondly, using a sweetener. Now, I personally do not enjoy the flavour of cardamom with chocolate (the Oreos) so, I have left it out. Second, I have not used any sweetener in my tart filling because, both the mango pulp and the Oreos together, are sweet enough for my taste. Nonetheless, if you would like your tart filling more sweet, you may add sugar or any sweetener of choice, as per taste.
This very easy and utterly delectable mango dessert will come together in less that 30 minutes for you. However, the most difficult part is to wait to eat a slice out of it, until it is completely set. You will need to let this chill in the refrigerator, twice. First is when you finish making the base – that needs to chill for about 15 minutes. This is so that the ghee in it firms up, thereby holding the Oreo tart base together. And the final one is, after you have filled the tart in with the mango yoghurt. In my recipe, I have added vegetarian gelatin to the yoghurt mix, to help it set. However, you could also use agar agar or any other setting agent that you have on you.
Serving suggestion
This is a summer dessert that you can easily make and win hearts. After all, who doesn’t love mangoes, especially the Indian ones. And to have a dessert that also has chocolate in it along with mangoes, heavenly indeed! Serve this chilled, topped with some chopped, fresh mangoes and mint leaves and bask in the divinity! This is going to be that dessert, that you will want to whip up, every summer!

Oreo mango shrikhand tart
Equipment
- 9 inch tart tin
Ingredients
- ¾ cup Greek yoghurt or hung curd
- ½ cup mango pulp
- 300 g Oreo biscuits about 2 packs
- 3 tbsp ghee or butter
- 3 tbsp gelatin
- 2-3 tbsp honey/maple syrup optional
For garnishing
- fresh mangoes diced
- 2 tbsp pistachios chopped
- 3-4 mint leaves
Instructions
- In a food processor (or mixer) crush your Oreo biscuits to a fine powder and remove in a bowl. Mix the ghee in, very well and evenly, using your fingers
- Empty this mixture in the centre of your tart tin and spread it around to cover it evenly. Keep this in the refrigerator to chill for at least 15 minutes
- Mix the gelatin with equal quantity of hot water and set aside
- In a mixing bowl, add the Greek yoghurt, mango pulp and the gelatin and whisk very well. The gelatin needs to gel in uniformly
- Remove the tart shell out of the refrigerator and pour the yoghurt mixture (aamrakhand) in it. Again put it back to chill for at least an hour or two
- When well set, remove your yummy Oreo mango shrikhand tart from the fridge, slice it up, garnish with some chopped fresh mangoes, nuts and mint leaves and serve. Enjoy!
Notes
- You could use Oreo original or chocolate, either of it works
- To make hung yoghurt, wrap and hang your regular yoghurt in a muslin cloth for about an hour or two, so that any water drains. This hung yoghurt is called chakka, that is used to make the shrikhand
- When using Greek yoghurt, use it directly
- I have not added any sweetener to the yoghurt mix because the sweetness of the Oreo biscuits and mango pulp works well for me. In case you like it sweeter, add your choice of sweetener in step 4. When using sugar, use it in its powdered form
