A delicious, moist breakfast cake made with pear halves, chopped pears and also chocolate chunks. This is a yummy accompaniment with tea and coffee as well
This incredible Italian pear and chocolate cake has become our latest obsession! Believe you me, we finished it within two days of baking it! This cake has a moist crumb and we love the bits of pears and chocolate that interject the sponge cake. If you see closely, you will notice that the chocolate doesn’t take centre stage in this recipe. Instead, I have roughly chopped a bark of dark chocolate and added it to the cake batter. And this creates a beautiful surprise of chocolate bits while having the pear cake. Moreover, even the fruit is added in two ways here. One it is chopped and mixed with the cake batter and two, pear halves adorn the top of the cake. And the chopped fruit in the batter is also responsible for it turning out to be incredibly moist.
You can now understand the reasons for our obsession with this Italian cake recipe. It is delicious and so pretty to look at, too. So much so that I didn’t feel like slicing through it even! This is actually an Italian breakfast cake recipe. This Sicilian cake is eaten in the morning and I think its’s a great alternative to cereals and milk 😉 Coming to the recipe, I have tweaked the original method of making the Italian pear and chocolate cake. I have given it a rather healthier touch by replacing plain flour with whole wheat flour and refined sugar with maple syrup. Therefore, making my version of this pear cake a guilt free indulgence. Another reason we didn’t hold ourselves back when we finished the cake in two days.

Autumn recipe
Autumn is the time when pears are available abundantly and so you should give this cake recipe a try. It is a delicious autumn recipe and is a win win when you love chocolate and fruits in your cake. This pear and chocolate cake pairs really well topped with some cream along side coffee. I have also paired this with a cup of chai and we loved it, as well. And I am sure you are going to love it too when you try it out. And when you do, do let me know how you enjoyed it. You can also share your food pictures with me on Instagram. I’d be thrilled to hear from you.

Italian pear and chocolate cake
Equipment
- Oven
Ingredients
- 1 cup wholewheat flour sifted
- ½ cup dark chocolate roughly chopped
- 3 pears
- 2 eggs
- ¾ cup maple syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- 75 ml milk at room temperature
- 100 ml olive oil or any flavourless oil
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
Instructions
- Peel the pears, cut them in halves and core them. Chop three of these halves roughly and keep aside
- In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Mix well
- In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, oil, maple syrup and vanilla essence, until light and frothy. Gradually add the flour and the milk and whisk until nothing looks dry
- Now, fold in the chopped chocolate and the pears. Pour this in a greased loaf tin or a cake pan and place the remaining halves of the pears on top. Gently tap the tin a couple times to release air bubbles
- Bake in a pre-heated oven for about 60 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean, at 180°C. Rest the pear cake for 5-10 minutes
- Serve your delicious Italian pear and chocolate cake dusted with icing sugar and cream. Enjoy!
Notes
- Use a melon ball to core the pears
- You can use sugar instead of maple syrup and also plain/cake flour instead of wholewheat flour
- I have used 70% dark chocolate for the recipe, however you could also use chocolate chips and/or a sweeter variety of chocolate
