This 4 ingredient recipe is an incredibly easy way to make your own hot chocolate pre-mix from scratch, which also makes for a very special Christmas/festive season gift
After all the Indian festivals, it is now time to start putting up our Christmas tree! The streets here in London are adorned with lights and are buzzing with Christmas markets. And what joy it is to stroll along these streets while sipping on mulled wine and/or hot chocolate. Both these drinks are my winter favorites and of late, I have been making my hot chocolate pre-mix at home, itself. Instead of buying the ready made ones, I make my own homemade hot chocolate mix and customize it’s flavor. Ever since I’ve started doing so, it’s made my hot chocolate drinking experience even more special. Moreover, I love gifting these to friends and family, as well. And let me tell you, it makes for an incredibly thoughtful Christmas gift. After all, who doesn’t love a cup of hot cocoa on a chilly, winter evening?
This is a gift that everyone loves, kids and adults, alike. Once you make your own homemade hot chocolate mix you will realize how easy it is to make it from scratch. And you will never go back to buying them again. Like I said, I also love playing around with it’s flavor every time I make it . For example, chai spiced, chili, peppermint, pumpkin spiced etc. Therefore, when gifting, you could create different flavors using the same recipe. What’s more, you can also add various toppings to your pre-mix, chocolate chips, marshmallows, crushed candies etc. You could let your creativity take over and rule your hot chocolate mix making process. Trust me, it is so much fun doing it. In fact, you could also involve your kids in the process, they will enjoy it too.

Storing and packing
Once you’ve made your homemade hot chocolate mix you can store it in air tight containers. They will last up to three months. But if you are someone like me, who prefers making smaller batches of mixes, then this recipe is perfect. With the quantities I have used here, you will get about 250 grams of the hot chocolate mix. And for a chocolate lover, this wouldn’t last more than six to seven rounds of a good cuppa! However, you can increase or decrease the quantities of your ingredients, proportionately, to alter the final measurement. When gifting, you could pack the mix in small glass jars, garnished with your favorite toppings. Alternately, you could fill in glass tubes, food grade plastic cones and seal them with ribbons, as well.
As easy as it is to make this pre-mix, the next step of making a cup of hot chocolate using it is also very simple. Mix together the hot cocoa powder with milk and microwave (or even cook on stove top), until thick and luscious. In fact, you could even use water instead of milk, as your pre-mix already contains milk powder in it. No matter how you choose to have it, I promise it’s going to taste truly special.
If you are planning to give this homemade pre-mix recipe a try, I’d love to hear back from you. You could share your food pictures with me on Instagram and Pinterest. Alternately, you could share your feedback in the comment section below and also rate the recipe.

Homemade hot chocolate mix
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup milk powder unsweetened
- 3 tbsp sugar or to taste
- 2 tbsp cornflour
Instructions
- Take a mixing bowl and place a large sieve over it. Start sieving each ingredient one by one, so as to get a fine, lump free mix - whisk to combine them evenly
- Use a spoon/scoop to transfer this to air tight jars. Top your hot chocolate mix with chocolate chips/shavings/marshmallows etc. Enjoy!
To make hot chocolate using the mix
- In a mug, add two tablespoons of the hot chocolate powder with a cup of milk, stir in throughly. Microwave for 2 minutes, top with chocolate shavings and serve
- Or in a saucepan, add two tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix with a cup of milk, stir in throughly and simmer until just about bubbling. Remove from heat, pour in a mug and serve
Notes
- Make sure to use good quality cocoa powder for a rich hot cocoa experience
- I have used light brown sugar as my sweetener. You could use granulated, white sugar or even powdered jaggery
- If you wish, you could leave the sugar out in your pre-mix. You can sweeten your hot chocolate once it's made as well
- You can flavor the mix with spices, dried orange zest, pumpkin spice, etc. In that case, mix it in step number 1
- This will stay fresh up to three months
- These quantities yielded about 250 grams of homemade hot cocoa mix
- 1 cup = 250 millilitres
- tbsp - tablespoon
- tsp - teaspoon
