A very delicious and easy recipe of caramel custard/flan that comes together with just 4 ingredients and in 5 easy steps!
Even though I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, there are two desserts that are my weaknesses. One is the gulab jamun and second is caramel custard. And while I haven’t yet mastered making gulab jamuns, I have however, nailed the later. Moreover, I make mine with milk and not cream, like other recipes, so mine is much lighter making them a great option even for your tea time. My husband, especially, loves my easy caramel custard (caramel flan) with his cup of black coffee. Moreover, since he loves caramel as a flavour, this dessert is a winner in my home. So, I often bake these when we feel like indulging ourselves. While this make not be a quick recipe, it surely is a very easy one, so easy that you only need to make caramel, mix a few ingredients, bake and then refrigerate it.
Additionally, you will need only four ingredients to make this delicious and easy caramel custard (caramel flan). And chances are that you already have all of them in your kitchen! So, you can make this delectable custard for yourself and your loved ones whenever you feel like it. You could make your custards in separate ramekin bowls, like the way I have. Or you could also make it in one big bowl and cut slices off it and serve. But do make sure to use make oven safe bowls/dishes to bake your custard in. Besides taking care of this small little detail, everything else is child’s play about the recipe. And if you are like us, who love caramel custards, you definitely need to make this soon!

Now, if you are someone who’s made caramel earlier, you’d know how easy even that is. However, if making caramel is new to you, don’t worry this is a great way to start. To make it, you will simply need to melt sugar with a little water until it turns a beautiful golden brown colour. And this is done over medium-low heat, so as to be careful to not burn the sugar. There is a very thin line between making caramel and burning the sugar, and you don’t want to cross it. So, be careful and be patient and you’ve got this! Once it is ready, you will need to move quickly with pouring it into your ramekins, otherwise your caramel will harden, making it tough to work with it.
Once the caramel sets in the bowls, you will then need to ad the eggs and milk mixture in them and bake. These custards are best enjoyed chilled, so you can enjoy them once they are well refrigerated.
My easy caramel custard (caramel flan) is a great dessert to make when entertaining guests at home. Not just because these are loved by everyone, but also because you can easily make them a day ahead. And just before serving, you could remove the custards from your refrigerator, slice it up and serve. This delicious, melt in the mouth custard is a major hit with kids, too. In fact, you could even bake these divine treats along with them as a fun activity. Nonetheless, whether you make these for yourself or your loved ones, make sure it’s a big batch. That’s because, there is going to be more than one serving for sure! 🙂

Easy caramel custard (caramel flan)
Equipment
- Oven
- Ramekins
Ingredients
- 1½ cups whole milk
- 1¾ cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 tbsp vanilla essence
Instructions
- In a pan, over medium low heat, melt 1 cup sugar with a tablespoon of water until it turns golden brown (caramelises)
- Quickly pour the caramel, in equal quantities, in your ramekins and allow this to cool, so that it hardens
- In the meanwhile, whisk together the eggs, vanilla essence and remaining sugar, until light and frothy. Then add the milk and again whisk it, until well combined
- Pour this, equally, in the ramekin bowls
- Cover each of them with aluminum foil and place them in a baking tray. Fill the tray with hot water half way up to the bowls and bake for 60-70 minutes, in a pre-heated oven at 180°C
- Once done remove from the oven and let the bowls come to room temperature. Refrigerate the custard for 3-4 hours before serving
- When serving, use a butter knife to loosen the edges and then invert the bowls on to individual serving dishes. Serve your delicious caramel custard (flan) as a dessert or accompanied with coffee
Notes
- If you'd like your custard sweeter, you can adjust the amount of sugar in step 3
- Instead of baking these in separate bowls, you can also bake your caramel custard in one big, oven proof bowl
- The water is added to the baking tray in step 5 so that the custard cooks evenly
- 1 cup = 250 millilitres
